I've run along alot of rumors and a whole lot of incorrect stuff on people's webpages while browsing around. So...time to take down some of them. And you know, this ran alot longer then I thought, so when I get the time i'll hack it up into smaller pages...
This i've taken directly from Adi's World of FF8 and is just a WHOLE lot of misinformation about the plotline. Anything in italic text is my comments. Which means, i'm going to be making those annoying little notes every time something wrong is in there.
"Squall Leonhart, the hero of the story, and Zell, the slightly (slightly?) mohawked character, are both members of a military unit of the future.
(gee...I thought this was present time...)
Both men are assigned to safeguard a top secret project from anyone with more than a "casual" interest.
(They were going on a SeeD test, and they aren't members at this point anyway. Not until the mission is over. There was no top secret project in this game, other then Galbadia's whole world domination thing, and that didn't end up being so secret)
The two comrades are informed that this project is the building of a machine that allows for transport of objects and living organisms through different periods of time.
(no time travel until the compression of time)
The head scientist in charge of the operation provides a show of how his mechanism works.
(Odine?)
He quickly writes a diplomatic letter to the denizens of the future and tosses into the portal.
(oooookay...)
Unfortunately, the reply is a robotic war machine intent on destroying anything within range.
(X-ATM?)
While on its mission of destruction, it injures Squall (hence the large scar on his face) and causes massive damage to the area.
(Yeah, we all missed the big fight sequence in the very beginning. Ya know, the one where Seifer slashes Squall across the face? But the destruction could have been like..what X-ATM did to dollet while it was trying to squash Squall)
The arrival of the military quickly puts an end to the robot and Squall is sent back to the main base in order to recover.
(Quistis guns X-ATM down, and Squall never gets a chance to recover from anything)
Zell is ordered to remain at the laboratory to continue surveillance of the project. When Squall wakes, he finds the scar on his face as well as the distressing news that Zell, and the machine he was appointed to protect, was taken by a group of renegades.
(eh?)
Squall is now assigned to lead a group of ground troops on board a naval convoy (consisting of ships and submarines) in order to rescue both Zell and the time portal. If you have seen the Final Fantasy VIII Demo movie from E3, this is what is happening.
(That was the *censored* attack on Dollet *censored*!)
The naval raid is directed toward a well-guarded island with heavily armed defenses.
(Dollet!)
Our hero is able to recover Zell from a prison cell, but, along the way, he meets Lenore, a young girl with a blue dress and black hair.
(Zell saves Squall's ass in the prison first, then Squall saves Zell's ass *mutters*)
Lenore reveals that her family has been taken as slaves to mine a source of magic (possibly similar to the ESPERS of Final Fantasy III).
(Everyone but Rinoa's (her name is RINOA, not LENORE) father is dead, and she basicly hates him.)
Fearing detection, the renegades have made use of the machine themselves, transporting to another time. The trio, now hardened by their trials, agree to use the machine in order to apprehend them. Zell, being an officer of higher rank, orders Squall to remain and alert the military of their findings.
(Zell does NOT outrank Squall. Squall is the squad captain on their mission to liberate Timber, and he becomes the commander of Garden. Zell...runs around trying to get hotdogs.)
Ever loyal, Squall agrees. However, when Zell starts the machine up, an
animal-esque robot pops out, intent on the same mission of destruction as the first. Thinking quickly, Squall lures it away while Lenore and Zell hop in the portal and are transported through the fabric of time.
(NO MORE ROBOTS!)
Squall is now left alone with a dangerous adversary tracking him down. He heads through several towns, aware that he is being traced and eventually arrives at the military outpost, which he finds deserted (oooh!). By backtracking his way (and performing several evasive maneuvers on the robot), he travels to the time machine and jumps through.
(Squall doesn't run from any robots other then X-ATM, and thats because of the order to withdraw. He just...kicks ass and takes numbers. RENZOKUKEN!)
Squall now finds himself in a very primitive world (in his opinion). This is a medeival-esque time period, where battles where fought with swords, shields, and arrows and guns didn't exist (think of it as FF3 without the developing mechanical technology ..... sorry Edgar).
(It just don't happen)
Because of his current condition, Squall heads out to the nearest village. To his surprise, he meets another person from his time period, dressed in "modern" clothes and styles. He discovers that this person is named Laguna Loire and is known as the "world's greatest reporter" in this time period.
(1. He meets Laguna is Esthar, the most advanced technological place in the game. 2. Laguna is NEVER known as the world's greatest reporter.)
It turns out that Laguna has found the machine that Squall used in the future in a cave that he lives in in this medieval time.
(And what is it doing in a cave?)
By using it to transport to the future, he is able to report news before it happens and talk of futuristic developments.
(reeeeally)
Squall questions Laguna on how to return to the future and the reporter informs him that he must backtrack his way to the exact spot he appeared and the portal will open once, allowing him to go through. Laguna is caught in midsentence as an airship appears in the sky, hovering over the village and the surrounding vincity. The peasants and villagers, completely in awe of this advanced technology, believe the occupants of the ship to be gods. They quickly rush out of their houses, carrying the magic crystals they have mined as sacrifice.
(I'm pretty sure that the whole magic crystal thing was on Final Fantasy V)
Laguna, ever the avid reporter, rushes aboard in anticipation of a new story. Squall, perplexed by this occurence, joins Laguna on the ship and finds Zell and Lenore, as well as 10 (?) other people aiding them." - from the FFVIII Demo
(Never seen this in NO demo, and there aren't even 10 main characters you can use in the game. Squall, Quistis, Zell, Seifer, Zell, Rinoa, Selphie, Irvine, Edea. Thats Nine.)
(All in all, this is TOTALLY incorrect. I have no idea where all this information came from, but it might make a good fanfiction, no?)
Hidden character, Kikyo. (Untrue)
Someone dies out of your main characters. (Close, but untrue)
It's possible to meet Cloud in the first disc (Nuh uh)
Meet Sephiroth (I wish...)
Cecil from FF2 makes an appearance. (Sorry, the only knight here is Seifer)
Rinoa goes to Garden (Nope. She's from the Forest Owls)
